Cornerstone got the great privilege of hosting continental philosopher and theologian James H. Olthuis (Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto) and Arvilla, his wife, on Tuesday and Wednesday!
Tuesday, the couple visited an on-campus discussion group that has been using his book I Pledge You My Troth, an excellent and challenging text about relationships. The discussion was lively and energetic, and Olthuis had much to share having written the book almost 40 years ago, and it was a blessing to see him and Arvilla truly living out the troth he wrote about.
Wednesday, Olthuis and Arvilla showed up at the ongoing Dinner With a Side of Justice series to answer questions relevant to this week’s topic, “Justice and Love.” Afterwards, they stopped by Dr. Bonzo’s class “Postmodernism and the Question of God.” Olthuis was gracious enough to share his work on God’s “sovereignty without sovereignty,” a sovereignty of love. Interacting with John D. Caputo, Richard Kearney, Jean-Luc Marion, and his own work on “with-ing,” he discussed some common pitfalls of modern theology, theodicy, and entertained questions from students. As always with Dr. Olthuis, who is also a professional counselor, conversation was a meaningful weaving of higher level philosophical dialogue with personal consequences and anecdotes.
Audio from both events was recorded and will hopefully be available soon.
We want to extend a huge thank-you to Dr. Olthuis and Arvilla, as well as to Dorothe Bonzo for her delicious food!
